A. Collages should be built around an idea or a theme. Your theme might be summer, night sky, happiness, eyes, machines, horses, self-portrait, or something else. When you put together your collage, your theme may be obvious or your collage may just feel like your theme. But the theme is important as it will bring all of your different materials/objects together into one piece of art.
B. After you have decided on your theme, then go looking for things which will help show that theme.
v Think of colors that go with your theme, for example, summer might be greens and yellows; night sky might be blacks and silver; happiness might be yellow, orange and pink.
v Think of textures that go with your theme, for example, machines might be smooth, shiny and metal; horses might be soft and furry.
v Think of shapes, for example round and curved things might be better for happiness, and square, straight things for machines.

NOW YOU HAVE YOUR THEME AND YOUR MATERIALS,
FOLLOW THESE CONTEST RULES:
|
1. The contest is open to summer reading kids who have just finished grades 4, 5, or 6.
2. Your collage should be your work alone, not the work of your parents, siblings, other relatives, or friends.
3. Build your collage on a 12 X 18 piece of corrugated cardboard cut from a box. It should not be bigger or smaller than 12 X 18. Use a ruler!
4. Use at least 8 different materials/objects in your collage to depict your theme. You can use more.
5. Use any appropriate glue to fasten your materials to the cardboard background. Your collage should be able to hang on the wall without materials falling off.
6. When your collage is finished, it should cover (hide) all of the corrugated cardboard base (none of the cardboard should be visible). Consider covering the cardboard with a background before building your collage on top.
7. Objects used on the collage can not extend beyond the 12 X 18 cardboard.
8. Objects can not be more than 1/2" high (sticking up above cardboard).
9. You may use pencil, crayons, markers, pens, or paint to embellish you collage.
10. Be very neat. Use the glue carefully. Do not put too many materials on your collage. Everything you choose should be necessary to the art piece or you should leave it off.
11. Have fun and be creative! |
