Origin:
Derived from the Latin phrase “ne supra crepidam” (“not beyond the shoe”), linked to the ancient Greek painter Apelles. The story goes that a shoemaker correctly pointed out a flaw in a sandal in one of Apelles’ paintings, but then tried to critique other parts of the artwork. Apelles responded by telling him to stick to what he knew—his shoes. The term ultracrepidarian was later coined in the 19th century (first recorded by William Hazlitt).
