Can you find the Dog Star, Sirius? It is twice as bright as our sun and relatively close to earth, making it the brightest star moving across the February sky. Sirius is in the Big Dog constellation (Canis Major). Thankfully today’s Kansas farmers don’t follow the ancient Roman tradition of sacrificing dogs to protect their wheat crops from disease thought to be brought on by Sirius! You can find Sirius by following the belt of Orion down and left as the Great Dog stays faithfully at the Hunter’s side. Rosetta Graff with be reading the poem “Dog Star” by Kevin Young taken from the Humanities Kansas book, “Written in the Stars” at the library program on Monday, February 24 at 7 p.m.
